What Is Tooth Enamel
Enamel is the outermost layer of our teeth. It protects our pearly whites from wear and tear. It also insulates us from feeling pain and sensitivity.
When this protective coat erodes, teeth soften and become vulnerable. Cavities may form, and dental treatment such as fillings may be needed. Enamel contains the same minerals found in bone — calcium and phosphate — but arranged in a complex crystal pattern that makes it uniquely strong.
Why Does Enamel Wear Away
While enamel is very hard, it is also brittle. Acid from food and drink dissolves the mineral surface. Saliva works to neutralise acid, but when acid attacks happen too often, saliva cannot keep up. As a result, the mineral in our teeth dissolves, and enamel gradually erodes.
People with certain medical conditions face higher risk. Conditions such as acid reflux or bulimia expose teeth to repeated acid contact. Regular dental check-ups catch damage early and protect your smile.
How You Can Protect Your Enamel
You can take simple steps to slow or prevent erosion. Limit acidic foods and drinks including fruit juices, fizzy drinks, and sour sweets. Rinse your mouth with water after eating or drinking something acidic. Wait at least 30 minutes before brushing to avoid scrubbing softened enamel away.
Your dentist or dental hygienist can monitor your enamel health. We recommend fluoride toothpaste to strengthen remaining enamel. Chewing sugar-free gum stimulates saliva production, which naturally repairs early damage.
Can Science Regrow Enamel
Researchers in China have developed a special gel that regrows tooth enamel. The gel contains mineral clusters found naturally in teeth. In lab tests, it rebuilt the crystal structure exactly like real enamel. This breakthrough is exciting, but human trials have not yet begun. We cannot use this treatment in practice right now.
