Oral Health Foundation welcomes new green paper
The Oral Health Foundation welcomes the government’s green paper “Advancing Our Health: Prevention in the 2020s”.
This document from the Cabinet Office and Department of Health sets clear new goals. It will roll out supervised toothbrushing in nurseries and schools across England.
What the Green Paper Covers
Proposals aim to reach 30% of the most deprived 3 to 5 year olds by 2022. It also addresses fluoride protection. As a result, the NHS will work closely with local councils to put effective plans in place.

A Positive Step Forward
Dr Nigel Carter OBE, head of the Oral Health Foundation, praised the plans. However, he also says steady action is still needed to improve oral health across all communities.
Why Early Care Matters
Helping children learn about oral health early makes a big difference. Tooth decay is the most common health issue for children and young people. In fact, hospital visits to remove teeth in those under 18 have risen to nearly 43,000 recently.
Latest numbers show one in four British children have tooth decay when they start school. Also, fewer than one in five children eat five or more fruit and vegetable portions each day.
Fluoride Protects Teeth
Adding fluoride to water is a proven, safe, and effective solution. Therefore, we want to see it used across the country. Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel and fights decay. It also cuts down harmful acid that bacteria make on teeth.
